The Derry Township Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency in Derry Township, Dauphin County, more commonly known as Hershey, Pennsylvania. The department was created on July 1, 1966 by the Derry Township Board of Supervisors. The department is currently made up of 39 sworn police officers, including the Chief of Police, two lieutenants, and five sergeants.
In addition to the sworn officers, the Police Department employs two full-time and three part-time secretaries, five full-time and five part-time Communications Specialists, eight part-time Community Service Officers, and six part-time Special School Police (Crossing Guards).
The Patrol section is made up of four primary patrol platoons. Within those platoons operate the K-9 section and traffic safety sections. A fifth patrol platoon is dedicated to community policing. The departments Criminal Investigation Section is comprised of one Detective Sergeant and four Detectives. This section is also responsible for the agencies identification and forensic services.
The department also has officers assigned to the Dauphin County Crisis Response Team, Drug Task Force, Accident Reconstruction Team, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Capital Area Forensics Team.
The Derry Township Police Department is now in its fourteenth year as an Internationally Accredited Police Department, This accomplishment is significant given the fact that there are 1,253 municipal police departments in Pennsylvania, and the Derry Township Police Department was the 5th municipal police department to receive this honor of Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The Department received accredited status in 1997 and has been accredited since.
The Department also holds accreditation from the Pennsylvania Chiefs Of Police Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. The accreditation was granted in July 2002 and has been possessed since making the Derry Township Police Department one of the few agencies told hold dual accreditation.
